You probably want a long range accurate gun. 300RUM R700 are cheaper than 308. 300RUM is basically the big brother of 300winmag. So you are looking at very long range and lots of ft/lb, if any of this matters for you. Antimateriel, anti-elk, whatever. Check out backplate deformation. Multiple hits on level IV plate with 300 RUM also kills the plate. Big hole after the third shot. Or maybe you want compatible ammo to save on carrying so you go with 308.
