Fishing spot was on/near a pot grower's field, is my guess.

... or it was a drug deal gone bad, disguised as a "fishing trip".

The first one was BEATEN then shot. His other friends showed up and were shot. Clearly they were ambushed. Pot growing near a local fishing spot where people are likely to find the grow area is not likely, IMO. Most pot growers pick remote locations, typically on private property that can be marked "no trespassing".
