Have to admit that shucking peas was not exciting; we'd tolerate it for an hour or so and run off to play. There was a small creek with crawdads and catching them (or trying to) was time well spent.
We were fascinated with my grandmother's storm cellar and we hiked/played in the woods for hours.
I hated shucking peas. Also taking the ends off beans, and especially picking gooseberries.
Now, I look back and feel nostalgic, but at the time...not so much.
