The gate can be closed with the plywood folded up to lay flat and upside-down over the truck bed. Can be deployed quickly, just open the tailgate and flip it over. Paint away, and then cut the contraption loose and close the tailgate when you're finished. Speed off safely into the night. No paint on your truck or your tires. You lose a piece of plywood but it's cheap and who cares.
