More importantly, IMO at least, he also reiterated the US will do everything we can to not allow China to become the leader in 5G, and we've got a coalition of countries that have pledged to do the same.
If you don't follow the CCP very closely, you'd be forgiven because it isn't easy and there is no one to talk to about it even if you decide you want to do so, trust me. But if you did, you'd know there is nothing more important to China and their long term goals than 5G, especially now that they are seeing their traditional manufacturing base evaporate from under their noses.
China is in a full-on panic at home right now. Flooding is at century levels along the entire Yangtze river valley with no end in sight, they overplayed their hand with India and are getting way more blowback than they ever predicted, and they are starting to have runs on their banks. That is just the tip of the iceberg, China is huge and there seems to be a different disaster for every area in it right now, from where I sit at least. Bubonic plague in Mongolia, locusts, you name it.
Xi is in the fight of his life to remain in power right now. The party messaging is showing signs of turmoil, and Xi is running out of allies quickly.
In the middle of all of that, and directly after they'd sent a message with another "warning" GEOTUS drops the diplo-MOAB putting China on official notice that their claims in the south China sea don't mean shit, and we're ignoring them categorically.
I cannot imagine a bigger middle finger GEOTUS could have sent to Xi than what he just did.
