On top of that, the resulting paralysis of the website means that no one can connect. It's kind of like being stuck in a traffic jam on your way to the mall because someone intentionally jackknifed a fuel truck across the only road in and out.
The distributed part means it's coming from many different IP addresses, typically referred to as a botnet. Usually they are hijacked machines that have been compromised via some exploit. The DDOS is started using what is called command and control which communicates instructions to the botnet. You can actually rent time on these botnets to attack sites you don't like. So someone is likely bankrolling all of the attacks.
They get a bot net to all request information from the site at the same time to overwhelm it. There's too much junk coming in that the website server can't keep up processing it and legit people's requests get crowded out. They're often filled with routers and cheap "internet of things" stuff that have poor security and are easy to hack and gain control of. They're not very powerful on their own but they're able to manage simple online interactions and there are millions of them.
Well another expert could probably explain in more detail but it’s Dynamic Denial of Service, there’s no hacking into the backend to a site, afaik but it’s a coordinated effort to have many computers (bots automated whatever) all try to access a server at once to eat up the bandwidth and crash it so it goes down temporarily. If you can find the backend login, and just repeatedly try logging in with some username/password, that’s called a brute force attack, which is different from DDOS. I guess imagine a small bakery, and suddenly 1000 people roll up to buy bread, this would overwhelm the bakery to the point they have to shut down, hope that’s a decent analogy.
