The demographics in San Diego are changing right now, with cases moving rapidly from mostly white to mostly hispanic, and from elderly to working-age. There's a lot of inertia in the numbers, so the shift in deaths is slower, but real.
There are factories barely south of the border that are passing the virus around, among young adults, resulting in a lot more serious cases in that age group than was San Diego's prior experience.
My guess is that the problem there is DOSAGE and TIMING. If the space is not cleaned, and if otherwise healthy people ignore their symptoms because they need the work, the exposure to viral particles can get very heavy, very fast. A person who would typically fight off the infection can get overwhelmed by too much exposure. This is the problem hospital workers have. Also, a person who gets sick will start out with something minor, that causes a very sudden crash.
TLDR: Don't be stupid. You still need to protect yourself.
