Great book which consists of a series of 31 letters written by a master to his protege to help guide him on attempting to destroy a man.

In Letter VIII, Screwtape explains to his protégé the different purposes that God and the devils have for the human race: "We want cattle who can finally become food; He wants servants who can finally become sons". With this end in mind, Screwtape urges Wormwood in Letter VI to promote passivity and irresponsibility in the Patient: "(God) wants men to be concerned with what they do; our business is to keep them thinking about what will happen to them".

It's good for helping to recognize evil tendencies in oneself as well. I can't agree with the OP's recommendation highly enough.

One of my favorite books. It has a lot of great quotes that really ring true for what's happening today.

By the very act of arguing you awake the patient's reason; and once it is awake, who can foresee the result!

...the best of all is to let him read no science but to give him a grand general idea that he knows it all and that everything he happens to have picked up in casual talk and reading is "the results of modern investigation."

Great book! Just finished reading it. Bought a few more copies to pass out to friends along with instructions to pass those copies on to whoever then felt would read them.
