I looked it up because I was curious. It isn't quite quoted right above, but close. Here is the actual quote, and this is even funnier ... (it definitely sounds like something reporters from a few Lefty publications would be doing):
"If I had my choice I would kill every reporter in the world, but I am sure we would be getting reports from Hell before breakfast."
Yes, very real. Newpapers were "reporting" outcomes of Civil War battles when it was convenient to the reporter, ie in time to be printed the next day.
