I looked it up because I was curious. It isn't quite quoted right above, but close. Here is the actual quote, and this is even funnier ... (it definitely sounds like something reporters from a few Lefty publications would be doing):

Yes, very real. Newpapers were "reporting" outcomes of Civil War battles when it was convenient to the reporter, ie in time to be printed the next day.
