What I was taught about Islam when I went to school in the 80s and 90s:

  • It's another faith, just like Buddhism or Christianity.
  • It's what they do in the Middle East.

What I wish I was taught:

  • Important terms like Shaqiya, Jizrah, and Jihad.
  • What the essential points of their doctrine is: OBEY OR DIE.
  • What their founding religious figure did, how many people he brutally slaughtered, how many women he raped, how many slaves he raped, how many slaves he took and killed.
  • What some of their current religious doctrines are.
  • Whether it is compatible with America.

Yeah they taught me about the 5 pillars, and that Islam was no more violent than Christianity because ‘muh crusades’. I went to school in the same period of time you did. Oh and that early Christianity was remarkably similar to communism 🙄.

I remember being taught this by Christians. Damn close to blasphemy from what I know now.

Also learned in the 70's and 80's that these were crazy motherfuckers who will hijack your shit, bomb your shit, and cut off your head. Never once were they called a religion of peace.

We learned that from paying attention to world events. Our teachers were always, "Oh, it's just another flavor of religion, like Buddhism and Christianity. It's all the same."

It’s a political system as much as a “faith”
