Japan isn't hardcore anymore. Mostly conservative, yes. But they've been systematically neutered by US since WW2 and forgot what it means to fight. They've been completely dependent on the US for a stabilizing power in their region.
The younger generations aren't interested in relationships with women (can you blame them in many ways these days?) and check out as often as they can into alternative realities. Reproduction rates are plummeting. Come on Japan, find your nuts!
As long as it is North Korea and not China they have a chance. China is vastly superior in sheer manpower, missiles, and military craft. There wouldn't be a Japan left if the US wasn't right there arm in arm. I lived in Japan a few years and was not impressed by their military presence at all. But their gen pop is pretty soft.
U.S. State department authorized a $23.1 billion sell of 105 F-35s to Japan this month. Will still take several years to build and train pilots.
Good news that the Japanese make excellent pilots.
