Truth is, there will always be a certain amount of offshoring, it's is somewhat inevitable. We can only hope that the deal Trump makes are fair for us and gives incentive for companies to keep most jobs here.
It may be that ever couple decade we just have to uproot trade and start again.
Ultimately though, I'd rather be stuck tied to India then China.
India has a history of Western cultural values and honors/enforces Intellectual Property rights. They want products sold in their country by foreign corporations to be manufactured there, a protectionist vision similar to our own. An economic alliance with India is a massive improvement from the Sino relationship and they are concerned about China's military efforts in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Natural ally!
No they don't. They have no individual rights or freedom of speech in India. They have no republic. They are a communist dictatorship just like China and they have no respect for Western capitalism, they oppose it just as much as the CCP does.
Items are only low value if you make them low value in low value nations.
Ever buy a Chinese hammer? You might as well use your dick; it's less likely to break.
Everything they make that is just disposable is not even worth buying. Shit that you think "oh it doesn't need to be that much, I'll only use it a few times" won't even last a few times. On the other hand if you make it in America, properly, it costs twice as much but lasts forever.
It's a philosophy problem. We chose cheap, disposable goods and and a throw-away lifestyle while helping 'other nations prosper" over our own prosperity, long-lasting and fixable things. We chose the wrong path, period.
And it was the worst choice we ever made. All these boomers spent their entire lives making bank and now their kids and grandkids are FUCKED. Everyone in their 70's that I know is retired and spends their days doing whatever they want, no worries other than their meds. I'll never retire. It will never happen. 35 years from now when I am that old, a hundred dollars won't buy a loaf of bread and we'll be lucky if we're not a communist nation. I'll be amazed if I make it to be that old without getting stabbed or shot by some fucking mongrel for my wallet.
But it's going to get even worse, because they're going to toss communism on our backs next, and it'll be sooner than we think.
It is not a substitute. It is a trade and manufacturing alliance with a fellow democratic and open society that is accountable to its own people. We want and need this. It’s not some replacement for more offshoring of jobs.
India is not a "democratic" nation, and neither is the USA, we are a democratic REPUBLIC where the rights of the minority are protected. No so, in India. They are just another commie shithole and we shouldn't be manufacturing anything there.
yeah yeah thanks for the civics lesson, I understand that. But ok, if you want to play that game then you too are wrong because we are technically a CONSTITUTIONAL democratic republic.
India is also a constitutional democratic republic. You couldn't be more wrong.
AI and Robots will replace these jobs by each passing year. The real dilemma nobody is talking about is...as society becomes more interdependent on efficiency of AI/Robots to take care of everyday labor and task jobs...what do those people do as workers? Factor in low IQ, disabilities, human inefficiency, etc. It becomes paramount to shift what it means to work and why. Jobs in general will be going away in America due to this alone. The number 1 job in the US, truck drivers, will be automated (if not regulated against) in the next 5 years or less easily. This displaces a ton of US jobs.
Start thinking about the future, not just the knee jerk reaction to the present. Welcome our robot overlords. Soon the matrix will be upon us!
Automation has been happening for almost 200 years and it has brought the world unprecedented prosperity. Such predictions have been made since the beginning.
While I understand what you're saying historically. We're also approaching unprecedented times with technology outpacing biology's ability to keep up. Improving efficiency is one thing, replacing the need for labor and workers is another. Pair that with the fact that we have an exponentially growing global population, and looking at the bell shaped curve of people in the work force, those who are not able to "learn to code" as Biden would put it simply are going to be in for a real struggle. This is where the knee jerk reaction for many on the left is Muh socialism safety net. I don't have real great answers, but I see the problem on the horizon fast approaching.
You're not using Luddite properly. I never claimed to be anti technology. I'm saying it is inevitable and nobody is talking about solutions to job replacement or the impact on society. I.E. Men often associate purpose/self worth with working.
Fuck china but also don't substitute India for china. BRING OUR JOBS HOME

Some jobs wont be coming back. Low value goods need to be produced in low value countries.
Everything of real value tho needs to come back home. PPE, tech, cars, etc.

Get out, shill.
Fuck India, go live there, it's a fucking shithole. Fuck you. We need jobs for Americans, not shithole Indians.

Very recently too. The computer was supposed to eliminate countless millions of jobs. Instead it created brand new industries.
Then again with the internet.

luddite go back to r/futurology

It's luddite communist bullshit. Job replacement by machines is a made-up fantasy problem, used to try to justify communism. Nothing else.
That sub is just climate doomer central
