You really have to start speaking to them like they're toddlers throwing a fit. When my 3 year old gets mad and kicks his feet, I don't get mad and kick my feet back, I just tell him "No." and "Crying isn't going to change the answer."
My favorite dismissive remark IRL to this kind of stuff is "I'm pretty sure that you aren't gonna do shit." Which always stymies them real good. Because it's not like they can do anything in that moment but continue empty talk and threats. Of course if they do actually something it will be spontaneous and shitty.
Fauci would have done better for himself if he would have just stayed quiet instead of undermining elected officials who have to make decisions based on more than infection numbers.
