This is one of those "I have to say something" posts, sorry. Just listen to this perspective. Agree/disagree and move on.
The; "F*** school teacher's, get back to work assholes" & "Grocery store employees have been working this whole time!"
Consider the possibility the Wuhan Virus is real, and it's contagious. And consider the possiblity it kill ~0.05% of infected adults.
Now please understand this as a fact; High Schools are germ sharing, cold/flu infested environments. At any given point in January, about 25% of my students were sick. The whole damn school got sick in about a 4-6 week period. Including myself. I had the most ass kicking cold ive ever experienced. I had to go home one day during work because i was so whipped out. (I'm not rambo, but i've never skipped work over a cold) [Wuhan Virus, perhaps?]
With that said;
-
(just consider the possibility of 0.05% mortality, I KNOW THIS STAT IS VERY POSSIBLY WRONG) For every 200 teachers infected, 1 would die.
-
I have a Master's degree (196 total college credit hours). Some of the best classes I took in college were online. I am confident, online classes are an awesome pathways to education.
-
one of our educators died this summer from Covid.
So, Why is it worth risking the lives of students and teachers? What's wrong with teaching online until we have a vaccine?
P.S. I am a conservative high school government teacher. Politically, I am behind enemy lines daily. Our English department spews liberal thought process all day every day. My Government lead and "assigned mentor" is hard left. She considers CNN an unbiased news source. The list of liberal indoc in my school goes deep. (and I teach in an affluent community)
I do my best to be an un-biased Government teacher. I give my kids as much information and perspective of both sides as possible. And I encourage them to think for themselves and make their own decisions.
I would advocate for the older teachers to teach remotely.
If your under 40.... show up to work.
RNA vaccines do not work. You should really abandon this checkpoint for returning to school.
that's not quite true, my Doctor said they are 20% effective, I'm allergic to vaccines so not taking it anyway
Either your percentage or your math is wrong.
At 0.05% mortality, 1 in 2,000 would die.
At 0.5% mortality, 1 in 200 would die.
Meant to be 1/2 a percentage point. So, 0.05% was wrong. Thanks for edit.
Thank you for your rant, and especially for being a conservative in a hostile environment. Glad to hear the opinion of someone who is in the mix. MAGA my friend and keep teaching the history and government of our wonderful country.
I suppose it was a rant. Thanks for listening.
you seem to be giving a heart felt opinion, but it does seem that you advocate for not opening the schools, my sons are out of 1-12th grades but the kids need to get back to school. When the teachers union say's they wont go back to school until ALL the non public schools are forced to close, this becomes a political agenda
We know the treatment now too, hydroxy and zinc at the first symptoms.
Do not be afraid.
The flu (you know, the seasonal one) kills people too. Except instead of 77-year-olds it kills kids.
Yet they still go to these germ factories 5 times a week, year in and year out.
Stop being afraid. Live your life. If you don’t want to catch the virus then wash your hands and stop touching your face. The nightmare scenarios we were told in March, that this thing can live for 3 days on cardboard or 7 days on metal, and kills 4% of infected people, were all wrong.
You have to stick your neck out sometimes man. Show those kids that not everyone is a cowering pussy. Be a leader.
And if not, then just take early retirement. Public Teachers retire on average at 58 years old anyway.
Recognize that the entire discussion has nothing whatsoever to do with "Opening Schools".
Whipping up an emotional mob for "Mandatory All Mail In Voting" is the thing.
Does it seem odd? Yes? Figure out why
I think the problem is that there is so much misinformation it becomes natural to push-back on everything, including topics regarding Covid19. We shutdown for 3 months, then we have people rioting like crazy and people are gathering every night in Portland to attack a courthouse with no rise in cases! You can riot, but you can't go to church. It makes it difficult to take these things seriously.
I've seen videos since November of last year in Wuhan of people dying in the streets, doctors and nurses crying and pleading that they are scared and the world needs to prepare, patients lining the floors in hospitals, people breaking into apartments to take away the dead, so I take Covid19 very seriously because I had access to that information.
Fortunately, nothing like what I seen has happened here. Did the virus mutate and became not as lethal as it was in China? Were the infected individuals in Wuhan not as healthy as an average America, thus raising the death toll? We don't know, and that only adds to the skepticism.
Lastly, I see nothing wrong with working remotely and teaching remotely. I think its for the better! Parents can monitor the liberal filth teachers are pushing on their kids. Grocery store employees know not to lick door knobs, some lib's kid does not!
I would be ok with online classes. Where the students tune into the meeting and watch the teachers teach on a set schedule. Like a virtual classroom. However, my children's school puts up a video or a link to a 3rd party video. There is no classroom discussion. Any questions take a day to get answered. There is a way to do this better and no one seems to care to find a better solution. Our school just announced today that it will be 100% remote for the first 9 weeks. No. It will be the entire year without a doubt. The ONLY upside to this is that I don't have to worry about some liberal snowflake brainwashing my children.
Teachers are shockingly lazy and stuck in their ways.
In quarter 4 this year, Our online class structure and curriculum was mandated and it was a joke. I could have converted my class online in a week and it would of been highly engaging. Instead, we chose to give a maximum of One 15 minute assignment per week. It was a JOKE.
That's frustrating to hear. My son was actually in Shanghai when the virus started. After a bit of a struggle with his Dad, I got him state side February 4th. He continued his schooling remote to China the rest of the year. So when my youngest son's school started discussing remote options I offered a ton of insight of the pros and cons that my other son experienced in his classes. The local school district did not care at all. I refused to limit my children. So implemented spelling tests, group reading and time math tests. We even built a small robot. I would have done the extra STEM related activities anyway but would have expected more of a challenge on the school end. I understand that not all children have parents that go above and beyond. I am a stay at home Mom because we just moved to a new state. So I have the time, BUT even when I was a working parent education was a priority in our home.
even assuming those numbers are true and i don't still 0.05% is 1 in 2000 not 1 in 200
be careful your correcting the teachers math in their classroom, you get an F- My son is in his last two years for a chemical engineering degree and they are all labs so he is dropping out cause he can't afford to pay for them again and then close and no refunds again, and they can't be done on line
Because the magic number is "retiree age," starting about 65 years old. Are 65 year olds the ones who interact at schools? If so, let them go remote. So no, this is not any form of a solution considering the value of public schools.
Vaccines take decades to make, however yes online school is an option always. Why not give students the choice?
And above all, it was originally about this concept of "2 weeks to slow the spread." What happened to that?
My son is in his last two years for a chemical engineering degree and they are all labs so he is dropping out cause he can't afford to pay for them again and then close and no refunds again, and they can't be done on line, nobody I know has Covid and everybody is being terrorized by this virus, start living your life without fear, we all can die at any time and God fearing are not afraid. Atheists are afraid
Thanks for participating, Mike.
I'm a protestant. I pray and read the bible frequently. In fact, i keep a bible open on my desk at school, and thank God no one has formally complained.
I'd say I have a balance of fear / respect for something we don't fully understand & the facts a crazy-blurry in our current political climate.
Thanks for the honesty. I just moved to an unaffordable somewhat affluent area to try to outrun the liberal indoctrination. I have a 5 yr old that will start school this yr and most of the teachers in this elementary school have been here for over 15 yrs and are in the older and hopefully wiser category.
