At no point would a war with the US be favorable for the Chinese, for all their bluster the Chinese military is behind technologically in comparison to the US (and most of their technological advances have been stolen via espionage, frankly most Chinese tech is stolen) Their one advantage is to throw numbers at a problem.
They are at the point of conflict with India, they're hostile to Japan, they've alienated the UK & Commonwealth, most of South East Asia is extremely wary of the CCP and they even pissed the Russians off with the oil/gas pipeline fiasco where they double crossed Putin after the pipeline had been built so he was forced to sell them gas at cost.
Basically the Chinese have pissed of everyone, their economy is fueled entirely by foreign investment which is based on dodgy figures which the CCP has been making up for the last 20 years (no economy grows on target every year year on year) that investment is drying up, hence the destabilization, they've been engaged in currency manipulation for decades and trade manipulation through bribery and intimidation in Africa.
It's not payback, the Chinese are this century's Nazi Germany/ Soviet Union. If a collapse causes a regional conflict which forces the Chinese back on the defensive and curtils their regional ambitions so much the better, appeasing a totalitarian Gov. like China is doomed to fail.
Roosevelt and Churchill made that mistake with Stalin "If we accommodate him then eventually he'll learn how to behave like a gentleman" at no point will these kind of people ever learn other than through directly challenging them.
