They don't really work in a hospital either. It's just to make the patients feel better. The real effective procedure is washing their hands frequently and not working while sick.

Go try restricting water coming out of a water hose. Unless you cover it completely, aka a plastic bag, it comes out of the remaining orafic at a much finer stream and at a much higher rate.

ps Honestly, do you throw away your mask after every cough? If not, you have a petri dish growing the virus, increasing the chance of spreading the chinese flu.

2
thekindlyman555 2 points ago +2 / -0

Just being pedantic, but viruses don't grow on a petri dish unless it has healthy cells to infect embedded on it. So unless you're literally coughing up parts of your lungs into the mask, the virus won't GROW on the mask. But it can accumulate there.

dakin116 2 points ago +2 / -0

Pretty much the only time i've seen anyone wear a mask in a hospital:

Doctor during surgery when he's right in someone's grill. Cleaning a cryostat used to do a frozen section on a TB specimen.

Pretty much it

LieToMe 0 points ago +3 / -3

We’re not worried about infecting a surgical site with virus. Mainly to protect the surgeon from blood spatter.

Anyone testing positive is tested repeatedly until there are two or more negative tests. But every positive is counted as a new case. New cases are NOT necessarily new patients.

Do you have a source for this?

It's the same source you have. The internet. I just listen to doctors with no financial incentive to fear monger.

At the risk of telling you something you know already, he's talking about viral load.

It might make a difference with covid, and it does with other viruses. There has not been a lot of study into it for whatever reason.

4
ThePowerOfPrayer 4 points ago +4 / -0

You're right. It's ultimately up to your immune system.

However, reducing viral load gives your immune system a better chance of fighting off any viral infection.

To relate this to your analogy, a man with ridiculously low sperm counts will have a harder time getting a woman pregnant, although it doesn't eliminate the possibility completely, That same man wearing a condom still has a slim chance of getting a woman pregnant if the condom breaks or any seminal fluid spills out.

With that being said, over 99% of all people who get the China flu fight it off.

Also, homemade cloth masks are almost 100% useless (assuming you cough or sneeze into your elbow).

Surgical masks can help those who are actually infected and are "say it don't spray it" conversationalists who randomly break out in song in the grocery aisles from spreading any disease, and N95s are the only masks that offer protection from others.

If you are spraying a mist of water through a chain link fence, some of it sticks to the chain link so it's not like it has no effect. But it doesn't protect.

The science is neutral, but the scientists determine the answer they want to highlight based on the sponsor, they then carefully choose to set up the experiment to give a basis for whatever narrative they are promoting. It is JUNK SCIENCE. It is no different than JUNK POLITICS/MSM. It is not there to question, but to promote an agenda based on EMOTIONS.

12
StarsandStripes4Ever 12 points ago +13 / -1

It wasn't all that long ago that the church believed and mandated that the Earth was flat, and anyone who said otherwise was in the least excommunicated (Galileo) or worse. Fast forward to today, and we have the "church" of Science telling us that you can stop a virus (0.06 microns) with an N95 mask that filters down to 0.5 microns. Yet no one in the political world (except a very few) is willing to stand out and say the TRUTH simply because they fear for their political CAREER. The solution is simple, STOP voting for these useless politicians that profane our Constitution and perpetuate the Fake Science. MAGA

9
MAGANatsFan 9 points ago +9 / -0

And most people are not using N95s or are using Chinese made masks "labeled" N95.

7
StarsandStripes4Ever 7 points ago +7 / -0

and to top that there is clear evidence that it transmits in Aerosolized form rendering any "N95" mask redundant. (https://www.cebm.net/study/covid-19-aerosol-transmission-of-covid-19/)

-6
pallman -6 points ago +2 / -8

5 Microns are really large droplets and well within the protective range of an N95 mask. The fact that 5 micron droplets are being suspended in air for up to 3 hours is a really good case for wearing a mask in public indoor areas. A well made in USA N99 mask can reliably filter out particles down to .1 microns. I have a source that is in supply but I don't want to sound like i am promoting a particular brand.

Please consider some other sources on the science of masks. This isn't the best source I know but there is a good scientific case for mask wearing in public areas.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/06/11/fact-check-n-95-filters-not-too-large-stop-covid-19-particles/5343537002/

It has to do with the size of respiratory droplets (which spread the virus), not the size of the virus.

Sizes range from approximately 0.6 to more than 1000 µm

I understand the spirit of your post, and I agree...but just to be accurate, Galileo was excommunicated for saying that the earth revolved around the sun, contrary to the church's position that the sun revolved around the earth.

You are absolutely correct ! and I appreciate your comment and correction...

It also was a product of tradition and not the Bible. It's one reason a many greats Uncle of mine posted 95 thesis in a letter to the Archbishop and on the door of Churches in 1517.

When the Church is politicized, bad things happen. In fact, when anything is politicized, bad things happen.

Covering your cough with your hand only works if you touch nothing until you wash your hands. Otherwise, everything you touch, like handles and doors, are vehicles of transmission. But how do you wash your hands without touching the faucets and soap containers? You probably spread it more by touching the door to the restroom.

2
LieToMe 2 points ago +2 / -0

In medicine we actually turn off ( some faucets and open an close doors with our forearms and elbows. Not hard to do.

0
ThePowerOfPrayer 0 points ago +1 / -1

That's why you cough into your elbow. I was taught that in Catholic school by the nuns back in the 1980s.

Those same nuns would send me to the Principal's Office if I acted up since my parents signed the permission slip allowing corporal punishment.

Sister Barbara Ann was 6'2" and built like a linebacker and she had a wooden paddle with the words "Board of Education" engraved into it. I used to be able to read some of those letters when I held my butt up to the mirror after they were bruised on my behind. She didn't mess around.

Who knows? Maybe I'd be out repping Antifa if those ass beatings hadn't happened.

P.S. If you got to the end, thanks for reading my rambling Joe Biden story that had very little to do with the actual topic at hand.

That's always been my thought is they are a mouth cover for people coughing and sneezing. It's really simple to understand when your body is attempting to force something out it's going to propel it way out and all over the place uncovered.

The masks have become nothing but a visual indicator to ensure that people that are coughing and sneezing are going to cover it up. While the rest of us suffer that aren't coughing and sneezing. Sold off as "I wear my mask to show you I care way more about you than I do about a little inconvenience." It's sickening to read this type stuff. They always call it "my" mask and "your" mask too. I never do that BS is it a mask. It's not "mine" and I don't love it. I hate everything about it.

Had the NPC go crazy due to this.

Walked to a store to get a snack.

A store that had always been polite.

Thought it was odd, someone outside had a mask under their chin and were smoking.

Just so everyone knows, there was no law or official ruling that masks are mandatory.

Walked into the store.

No other customers there.

Person behind the counter, "Where is your mask?"

"Put on your mask."

If the health of the world is so important, why is their co-worker outside the front of the store smoking away?

8million people will die due to smoking, this year for the entire planet.

3

The local Burger King is on my do not support list. I wanted a mini shake, there was no one in the place and they wouldn't serve me, even though they can't be used at the table. It was just an opportunity to refuse service. Fine with me. With a few more like me, there won't be a job or restaurant either.

In my area the workers are just doing what they are told. They are being told that because the state is going around checking and if there are people in their store not wearing a mask they are getting huge fines.

24
spuger 24 points ago +30 / -6

ehh.

They do work - just not very well. IMO that's not the point. The masks are required in many states by order of the governor, and they have been for months. Thats not how we make rules in this country.

On top of that, the threat is over. The medications all work and there are at least 3 effective treatments. If we are wearing ppe for so few deaths, we should be wearing helmets or life jackets, not masks.

3
Wahzuhbee 3 points ago +3 / -0

Genuinely curious, do you have a source or data to support that places that have higher rates of public use of masks see a decline in corona cases? From what I've seen, most counties without mask mandates are doing really well while the places with mask mandates in place are experiencing the highest case numbers.

2
spuger 2 points ago +2 / -0

I do not, and I would be very sceptical of any such paper. People wear masks when their governor orders them to, or when they are afraid.

Just because everyone is wearing condoms to the baby shower doesn't mean condoms dont ever work, though.

It's more like wearing oven mitts to store a burning building, imo. Except theres no burning building. The threat was real in march. Now it's all made up.

The other part of this is that it’s a 99.5-99.7% survival rate. It’s even better for younger people. The only way to return to normal is herd immunity, so everyone under 40 needs to get it and become immune. If masks slow the spread, then they are keeping this BS from progressing.

If “New York did it right.”, then let’s get herd immunity like NY, except without the war crime of killing 40,000 grandparents.

13
CodeMonkey 13 points ago +27 / -14

I'm against mandatory masks and lockdowns, but we've got to stop repeating this retarded attempt at logic. Nothing is 100% effective. Say masks are 25% and lockdowns are 25%, then doing both at the same time gives 50% effectiveness (not exactly but you get the idea). Again this doesn't mean they should be legally mandated, but bad arguments are bad.

There is actually a discernible inflection UPWARDS a few days following the masking.

Also, CA has apparently not classified a SINGLE PERSON as recovered? WTF! Just keeping the numbers inflated again

-1
The_RedWolf -1 points ago +2 / -3

Well given that it takes a few days to be symptomatic it sounds like they got infected before the mask mandate

11

4
analog_shitposter 4 points ago +8 / -4

He’s not wrong though, Tomi’s argument is fallacious. The two options are not mutually exclusive—both masks and lockdowns are claimed to “flatten the curve” therefore both are being promoted.

To be clear I’m highly skeptical of the effectiveness of masks, and I love Tomi/OANN. And I think the lockdown has done more harm than good because we’ve missed out on herd immunity, and our immune systems are probably more vulnerable as a result. But hers is a bad argument and is easily refuted with the same claims that are being used to justify both masks and lockdowns.

Because they’re inflating the numbers to fan the flames and keep us in lockdown

Not sure why you are getting down voted for solid logic except that admitting a mistake on our side is bad feels. I agree that she made a false dichotomy. It is unwise to charge ahead in an information war using a broken idea. I appreciate your truth, but this is an emotional place meant for high energy Trump rallying. Sometimes the morale boosting comes at the expense of avoiding uncomfortable facts., it seems.

3
LieToMe 3 points ago +3 / -0

Fine. It’s unnecessary. The mortality rate is something like 0.01%. Even using BS Deep State numbers it’s only 0.5%.

It's been around a month in my area of Texas since they started pushing masks. I've seen nearly total mask compliance here despite the liberals screaming that there isn't because they saw someone walking outside 50 feet from anyone without one.

Yet, there's been no drop in their cases. If these things make so much difference shouldn't there have been a sharp drop off at some point?

I've just seen zero real world evidence that these mask mandates help at all.

5
PropagandaWizard1984 5 points ago +5 / -0

Masks are meant to enslave your mind. Masks are meant to break your spirit. Masks are the first step towards Hell on Earth.

5
thallos 5 points ago +6 / -1

This isn't a great line of attack, the flawed reasoning is assuming its all or nothing.

Imagine the masks reduce your likelihood of getting covid by 50%. That is nothing to shake a stick at, by all means put on the mask. But going out in public also increases your likelihood of getting it so by all means stay inside. That's essentially the logic you have to debate which is about decreasing probabilities of transmission rather than an all or nothing masks work / don't work.

1
barronwin 1 point ago +1 / -0

So it seems fair to maybe open up some, but not all businesses? Outdoor seating only for now?

2
thallos 2 points ago +2 / -0

Sure, people should just calculate their own risks and do what they feel is best. I'd maybe recommend wearing a mask because it's better probabilities but making people wear it is just... Unamerican.

2
Pravda 2 points ago +3 / -1

Don’t go this route. The argument is it reduces the R0, the spread. That’s ideally a powerful tool.

Attack the premises, but the all or nothing argument makes us sound like the crazed liberals. We should take the mantle of science and data based insights.

4
EdmondDaunts 4 points ago +4 / -0

R0 only matters when you are measuring the thing properly. Otherwise you are seeing multiple behaviours all being caught up and reported as Covid.

I mean isn't it common sense to check you're putting diesel in the car if it's a diesel car?

So maybe actually make sure you test and correctly recognise Covid and have a good track on the specific symptoms (rather than the scattergun everything is Covid)

Only then can you talk about R0 and especially so because you still have to relate it to other flu and coronaviruses. Where we do fuck all lockdown/distancing shite with.

2
Pravda 2 points ago +2 / -0

That's actually a pretty darn good point.

I've started perusing the 'hard science' for masks. Most are bad science. One is a biased UK researcher writing a study in 'narrative form', whatever the fuck that is. Another showed that families that wore masks (in China) were less likely to pass Covid to one another, no benefit however after one family member got sick. Who the fuck wheres masks with their family at home (outside of immuno-compromised homes)?

2
Weremoose 2 points ago +3 / -1

I'm going to play devil's advocate for the sake of improving our arguments.

The masks are not perfectly effective, which is why we still need lockdowns. But being imperfectly effective is not the same thing as having no effect.

Same thing with defund the police.

"Lol repubs think defund the police means abolish the police. Um, no dude, it means redirect funds to social workers"

"LMAO BOBALD TROMF THINKS JOE BIDEN WANTS TO DEFUND THE POLICE WHEN ALL HE SAID WAS REDIRECT FUNDS TO SOCIAL WORKERS"

Their narrative is simple, "I am always right and you are always big dumdum, also my obsession with feces and children. Bobo baby Trump poopy his diaper."

2
jamesfinmadison 2 points ago +2 / -0

Honestly, they stop large drop spread, but not small drop.

Aerosol is the "super spreader" vector.

Large drop is a small transmission vector.

Cloth masks don't protect us from aerosol, so it's literally an inside only, small vector benefit only. If you are up close and talking to someone indoors, the cloth doesn't block aerosol transmission so...

Tiny, tiny help here. But, still helps.

That said, FUCK MANDATES!!!!

I don’t hear enough about asymptomatic transmission. Masks don’t work if you don’t even have the virus to begin with. I want to know if asymptomatic transmission is a real risk, because as far as I know, it is not.

Billions of dollars thrown at the WHO, CDC and NIH...yet they don't even have their 'ducks in a row' when it comes to masks vs the general public. NO PROFIT. The billions line pockets........including big pharma.

They want masks to be worn so when there is any spike they will close down everything again.

Masks whether they worked or not were always seen as a "last defence" mostly in desperation to stop a massive spike. If people are forced to wear that last defence when deaths are down. Cases are down.

Everything will be shut down again. Maybe into next year. They want Trump to be king of the ashes.

I don't like masks. Bandanas look cool though.

There should be a limit on how hot someone can be. I'm offended by her hotness.

Okay think of a mask as your swim trunks, and think of your piss as your breath.

Now imagine that your pee-pee goes in and out 12 times per minute.

How long (regardless of swimsuits) untill everyones pee is mixed together in your bladder?
