The building is massive, everything important has gone digital so I bet there are whole floors full of useless paper records going back decades. I was creeped out when the story broke like the flames are eating important documents and this was some 'eve of war' thing.

But there is NO desperate entrapment angle like Japanese embassy at the start of WWII, where war removes all diplomatic assurance of an embassy's ability to transfer crates of documents out of the country. China's diplomatic privilege is still being respected.

This is more like the paper material is of no value whatsoever and not worth shipping back to China.

And it's everything, because who wants to sort through it. Probably the garbage while they are at it.
