The NFA has hurt our own weapons developement. There would be a reason for companies to pursue cheap compact full auto controlable PDWs with the civilian market available. Imagine a Skorpion, Tec-9, or Mini-Uzi if their developement had continued like 1911s or AKs. They would be the standard home defense or cop gun.
I mean the concept of a cheap stocked full auto pistol you can fit in a holster. I don't really care what the end result looks like. The MP5K is the best room broom. It really shines on a single point.
What's your opinion on open bolt firearms then, as an SOT? I could be barking up the wrong tree but i was under the impression they ran colder and they're cheaper to produce? Machine gun law also effectively killed off the double striker pin .22. Everyone knows .22lr is unreliable but very few people know they don't have to be. This reliability and flaw with the design was solved. Adding a second striker pin to a closed bolt design is imo impractical. Let's do some math. The cheapest, crappiest, nastiest .22lr everyone loves to hate is Remington Thunderbolt. 90% of the thunderbolts that go click no bang do in fact fire without a problem when rechambered with the rim repositioned respective to the striker. In my experience, roughly 15% of thunderbolts fail to detonate on first striker hit. This is ammo specific and not gun related. The next best ammo, Federal, reduced that percentage at least in half but costs at least 25% to 50% more. The jump in quality to reliability is CCI where they fail much less under 1% but cost double or even triple per round. By my calculations, American plinkers, by not using open bolt two striker designs in .22lr guns have, since the machine gun law came into effect, WASTED anywhere between 25% (at a minimum) and 300% on ammo. This has also had an effect on the guns themselves. It has pushed the development of the ruger 10/22 style guns as opposed to the cylindrical bolts necessary for open bolt mg. This has effectively doubled the cost of .22lr guns. Right now, without mg laws, we should have a full auto (with selective fire) open bolt version of the marlin 64 that costs about 100$ instead of the 200$+ of the 10/22 and they should have roughly the same accuracy. This may seem frivolous, who cares about .22lr after all but if you sit down and do the math, you count the MILLIONS of dollars (if not billions at this point) that these numbers add up to all of a sudden it stops being "not as much of an effect as you think" and we haven't even discussed design of heavier MGs and the numbers breakdown on THOSE is way more fun than plinkers.
There is a come back happening for stocked pistols too. There are some interesting braces for the glock. We are still missing almost a century of development on that front. China was the last time there a serious market for such things.
