Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
I'm not opposed to it- but they should be paid more in the event that they are competing with non-prison legal labor. In this case they aren't, but that's neither here nor there.
I think it'd be fair to pay the DOC more on behalf of the inmates. Where I work, it costs roughly 45,000 to house 1 inmate per year. The inmates receive free food, free healthcare (dentistry, medication, vision, therapy, everything), free programs and education, free access to the courts and all that entails...the DOC pays everything for them.
It's gotten so bad, that our department can't make ends meet, and took away from our pay. Officers bring home a little under 40k a year now.
I didn't even think about that, despite playing hours of prison architect 😂 good points. My big concern is prison labor undercutting local businesses in the same way illegals do.
Convicts? That's nothing. In Soviet Union schools leased students to farms all the time, Universities leased their professors to potato farms, No they won't like it.
I am all for covicts being used to fix and or work the fields like in the good old days. Once you commit a crime like murder or rape or pedophilia you lose your rights. And forcing labor on criminals is not the same as slavery.. if you think that’s tough and wrong, then just kill them.. No reason to put these evil people in a cage and then pay for their food, clothing,tv, education, and health care.. that is even more evil than putting them to work.,
For a while I’ve toyed with the idea that our justice system should be about repayment for crimes. So, if you steal from someone, you have to pay them back, including lost time and security, but that replaces your jail time. If you can’t pay, then you are forced to work, with your wage going to those you wronged, until they are compensated.
Obviously it’s easy for property crimes, but for others it gets difficult. Like, if you kill a 98 year old man who is just draining away his retirement savings, then technically you are saving money. But you should still be executed (in my opinion).
Be aware that you'll see terms such as "restorative justice" around that are more or less arguments to circumvent the proper judicial process such as the presumption of innocence and due process.
The tell is that the proper ideal of "justice" is modified, just like "social justice" isn't actually justice.
Oh, of course, and I’m only thinking about a change to sentences, not the process of finding guilt/innocence. However I don’t know where to go with the violent crimes, so the idea is probably DOA.
I should clarify from the comments I’m seeing on the post-I am absolutely fine with convicts being forced to work. I’m just saying if they think this is bad, they need to open up a history book on what Mao did. He sent all of the revolutionaries to the fields as soon as they helped him overthrow culture
i don’t have any issue with putting criminals to work to pay for their imprisonment, i sure af don’t want to pay for it. Also, prisoners don’t have to work, Punishments for refusing to do so include solitary confinement(not likely, 3 times as expensive for the prisons), loss of earned good time, and revocation of family visitation. waaah!
being in jail is paying for the crime of which you were convicted. working the fields is restitution for the harm committed against society and to pay for having to house your fuckwit self bc you broke the law.
Been saying this for years. Send the joggers in prison out into the fields 5 days a week. Send the peaceful doctors and lawyers in jail to break boulders. Full days, fed, clothed, paid (whatever prison jobs pay) etc. They won't have time for monkeyshines anymore and will be dead exhausted when they return to prison.
Idiot its in the constitution. Involuntary servitude as a punishment for crime. Like rioting and insurrection and being a democrT which needs outlawing as its communism now

Came here to post this. I don't know exactly how I feel about it, but it's legal and constitutional
If I was in prison I'd rather go work on a farm than sit inside rotting in a cage.
And in every Prison, they have that choice. Nobody is forcing inmates to work; it's voluntary.

Having a prison job is a REWARD for good behavior.
Not sure how to break it to the cuck on twitter. But uh you become a slave to the state when you are convicted and imprisoned.
Convicts? That's nothing. In Soviet Union schools leased students to farms all the time, Universities leased their professors to potato farms, No they won't like it.
Or, you just call 'em "temps".
I lease myself to my employer every day in exchange for a few shekels. Am I a slave?
Is choosing your master freedom?

Just something I’ve been thinking about.

This! No different. They should think of it as a “public works project.”
I say that if they don’t do some sort of work, they don’t eat. Just like the real world!

They just want to be the ones leasing

He has a point. But I also believe prisoners should be locked down 23 hours a day.
Buh muh that's not real communism
Now do the prisoners working the the Arkansas Governor's Mansion when the Clintons lived there.
If non-violent offenders can work on a farm in exchange for a reduced sentence and work history/skills on their CV then I say it is a good idea.
