I think with Obie there was some question relating to verbiage of whether his mother had been a citizen long enough for the rule to apply, since she was so young. It was something stupid like that. Cruz is also interesting in that there was a case made that his mother had given up her citizenship.

It was some obscure thing in the way the rule was written. You had have been an "adult citizen for more than so many years" and because she had him young, she hadn't been an adult long enough to qualify, even though she herself had been a citizen her whole life.
