STABLE GENIUS.

This. This so much.

Stop wasting money on the far-left indoctrination monopoly. Take the school taxes and give it to the people as an educational "Universal Basic Income" to subsidize the cost of homeschooling. Transfer control of education back to the parents.

Additionally, this will pave the way for a new era of free-market learning. Keep the money you would otherwise pay in school taxes. Maybe 1 parent can homeschool as a full-time job equivalent. Or maybe both want to work so they hire tutors and teachers online.

Whatever the case, this breaks the public grade-school monopoly, maybe for good. And we will all be better off for it. Give the money back to the people and let the free market decide.

Most are. They're "Developing Online Curriculum" which is practically code for "responding to a couple emails every day about possibilities in the ambiguously near future"

They aren't bothering to put in the effort, because every kid gets a free pass to the next grade this school year.

Anklebender13 5 points ago +5 / -0

It varies from school to school. My wife is a teacher in the NYC DOE and she was doing multiple sessions a day on zoom with her class as well as 1 on 1's. The problem is that there were some teachers doing literally nothing with their classes as well as parent's actually doing their kids work for them. She couldn't help but laugh because the quality of some of the kids work just shot up tremendously from when they were in school.

I also know on Long Island what you said is right on point. Kids were getting packets of work every week and that was pretty much it because like you said, every kid gets a free pass into the next grade this year.

15
Mexicola1976 15 points ago +16 / -1

You know they still have to teach and in some cases it's harder because they're still epected to hit benchmarks for their students- not all teachers are communists or layabouts- the virtual shit is a real pain in the ass for a lot of teachers.

18
pauljr74 18 points ago +18 / -0

agreed, I believe teachers get into education with great intentions, and public service in mind.....it's the teachers unions that brainwash many of them

As someone without kids but property taxes which fund schools, I feel doubly effected. So I pay for schools, parks etc via my property tax. I have 0 kids nor option to have them. And I do have family in public schools so don't think I'm a fuck them all kinda person. The issue is that leftist get to interject via the education system as much as they like but if you try to even put out right leaning FACTS teachers are fired (like the guy who was told resign or be fired for simply saying on tweeter something of the sort of but Trump is our president. A totally true and fairly begin statement. However the public school systems are spewing the same trash they did when I was a kid just much worse. CNN required viewing in class WTH!!! DISSOLVE IT ALL!!!!

unixchaos 1 point ago +1 / -0

I still remember the day I was told (in school) I would be the first generation to not do better than my parents. Growing up poor and shit hearing this from the people I was told to believe fucked my life up and sent me into a depression that would take me decades to overcome and only after many HUGE life choices had already be taken. Don't let any other kids have this happen to them!

6
StumpSmasher2 6 points ago +6 / -0

Fix the education system and everything else will sort itself out. The Teacher's Union has the same issue as the Police Union where it protects the bad while keeping the good from doing their job... But it's much harder to catch a teacher instilling Marxism and Victim Mentality than a bad cop.

From what I googled it seems that actually whatโ€™s happening is Britainโ€™s themselves are a bunch of fucks, and refuse to sell their land, so theyโ€™ll only lease it for 99 years. Britains need to push back on that and force a culture change by not agreeing to stupid deals that only allow you to rent the property. What a scam.

People think that's the real drive behind defunding police. Blue cities in bad shape pre covid are dealing with a bad economy where all the richest residents have packed up and moved. So they push to defund police in an attempt to reallocate those funds and make up for the incoming tax windfall.

At 100%, you don't pay property tax. So I could go out and purchase a large plot of land and as long as I'm living on it, I don't owe a dime to the government.

But yes. Fuck taxes.

10
LiberTerrarium 10 points ago +11 / -1

Why you are being downvoted for simply stating a basic truth about government: taxes are a necessary evil, is beyond me.

Taxes fund the very basic, Constitutional functions of government, namely defense, maintaining weights and measures, currency production, etc.

How do you downvoters think we have the most advanced military in the world? Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, Marines, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, BAE, and Boeing are not the names of charities... No, I don't like the military-industrial complex either, but most of you wouldn't want to replace this with federal employees doing the jobs of contractors.

We tried this whole "no taxes made by central government, let's rely on contributions from the states" thing. It was called the Articles of Confederation. In fact, the Articles were so freaking awesome as an instrument of government, that it was in effect for under 4 years. The weaknesses of the Articles were later addressed in something called The Constitution, mostly in Article I.

I could go on for more text wall, but I won't.

Source: I am a history and government teacher with a history degree (and other stuff) from a couple of rigorous programs.

The thing I hate more about property taxes is the double standard on them.

Let's say you buy a property from someone who was there for 30 years. They might be paying say $3,000/yr in property taxes. Now you get your property tax bill, it's magically "reassessed" and now your property taxes are $12,000 a year.

You don't even have to sell the house. Your family member passed away and left you some property? Unless they were smart and wealthy enough to put the property under a trust and have a lawyer do all of the trust paperwork correctly (which won't apply to 99% of the population) guess what. If you're planning on keeping that property, even though they've been paying under $2,000 in property taxes for the past 15 years, don't be surprised when next year the government sends you a bill for $7,000 a year now.

GodSaveTheWest 25 points ago +26 / -1

7
BestTimeToBAlive 7 points ago +8 / -1

Yeah, how would the govโ€™t be able to guarantee the $ goes towards kids education and not somewhere else?

2
MAGA_MEXICAN_CHILI 2 points ago +3 / -1

Probably will do it in a form of a grant.

  1. parent apply a child to a school or school hybrid program (3 days on campus 2 days off)

  2. money then gets transferred to that school to pay for the tuition

  3. any funds left over get reimbursed to the parent in a form of a voucher for supplies.

However to prevent the money being wasted, i'd probably put them in a form of gift cards to Office Depot or Staples and maybe JC penny for clothes.

8
HockeyMom4Trump 8 points ago +8 / -0

Just cut taxes. The government should not be in the business of handing out gift cards to Office Depot.

2
MAGA_MEXICAN_CHILI 2 points ago +2 / -0

Eventually a phase out is needed and cutting taxes would be great.

1
Litecola 1 point ago +1 / -0

They may try that but it's a door into having government oversee content and beliefs, will eventually kill religious and free-thinking private schools.

1
MAGA_MEXICAN_CHILI 1 point ago +1 / -0

They already do at the state level.

Private schools cannot hire teachers unless they have those stupid Union Teacher Licences (at least in CA). They can also lose accreditation as well at the state level. So in effect the state already affects catholic and christian private schools just by holding onto accreditation system and license.

Some people are starting micro schools now, where a group of parents homeschool each other's kids around an agreed upon schedule allowing parents to still have jobs. This is a bit different from co-ops which have been around forever because it's a full time school and not just an extra curricular. There are lots of great ideas out there even without the money, I couldn't imagine how many ideas will come up if we get to keep our money. As it is, I feel like I pay twice for my kids education, I pay the property taxes to the school, then I have to buy curriculum. That's not too mention that I quit working to stay home and teach them.

7
visorak 7 points ago +7 / -0

Best idea ever. One parent could easily school the kids of 3-4 families, depending on age, ofc.

All you need is a few good neighbors or friends. Pool your resources and start a small school in the basement.

2
Whereami 2 points ago +2 / -0

Iโ€™ve been toying with this idea. Three of my coworkers have wives who stay home.

We are going to bounce around their strengths and weaknesses and form a home school.

Fingers crossed it works out, Oregon isnโ€™t very friendly towards that idea.

14

I think Trump and the Republicans should run on ending Common Core and going back to Classic Math. The same math that human beings have used for thousands of years, since the beginning of math. The same math that the parents learned. Just say, โ€œCommon Core was an interesting experiment but it failed, and itโ€™s been failing for awhile now. We have the test scores. We see it didnโ€™t work. 1
Freebird 1 point ago +1 / -0

That would be awesome. It would not be easy to build a new school system/network, but I don't see how we move forward with our current one.

5
LiberTerrarium 5 points ago +5 / -0

Sounds great on paper, fails in reality.

I work in a division with access to scads of retired engineers, mathematicians, and people from what you would call "other important fields." For the last 10 years, finding math and physics teachers from this group has been nearly impossible--the pay for dealing with high school students is less than half of what they were making in their first field. Now add teenagers.

The few who do accept the pay and duties usually quit in the first week of school. They find out how much they actually have to do beyond show up and lecture. They can't teach and are not willing to invest the three to five years of teaching to refine their skills to become a decent teacher. And why would they if they've already retired?

1
Freebird 1 point ago +1 / -0

The hope would be volunteers who recognize the issue with teachers today. It might not be easy, but these are our kids we are talking about, and if we don't right course with our children, we will be lost at sea.

0
Brucesky420 0 points ago +1 / -1

My sister has 5 kids and both her and her husband work. Their schools district has mandatory online learning through at least September, but the writing is on the wall that it's going to pushed even further than that. How do they expect 2 working parents to have their kids at home doing a required minimum of 6 hours a day?

The forced from home schooling is just another way for them to attempt to hurt the economy. The left claims to care about the working middle and low class, but these policies will hurt them the most. This ESPECIALLY hurts minority families, who heavily depend on the school system while they can go make ends meat

Give the money to the parents, they'll need it

Would make it a stipulation that if your kidโ€™s can pass a standardized test, if they were home schooled the parents each receive $3000

8
LiberTerrarium 8 points ago +8 / -0

This. So much this. Homeschool can be done well but it can also be done terribly wrong.

There must be accountability all the way around if our taxes are being used.

4
eden_novaq 4 points ago +11 / -7

No standardized test.
Everyone has their own strengths, but if you judge a fish on his ability to climb a tree as his only measure of success he will spend his life believing he is stupid.

To put it another way, a family friend went to Hawaii for eleven days last year. He can't spell Hawaii or eleven, but it didn't stop him from being successful enough in life to afford such a vacation.

Homeschool mom here, starting our 5th year. We chose to homeschool, in part, to avoid BS standardized tests and allow our children to be free to develop their own skills. Are the "3 R's" important? Sure, but they aren't everything.

ETA: Personally, I'm more for tax $$ going back to the taxpayer, not parents of school children. And its because people will then want "stipulations", but I do like POTUS train of thought taking it away from the schools.

9
shurou 9 points ago +9 / -0

This. Many homeschoolers don't want "help" from the state, we just want to be left alone.

4
Litecola 4 points ago +4 / -0

We want our money back, though.

2
shurou 2 points ago +2 / -0

True. So cut the taxes and let us keep our money instead of sending out checks, that'll do quite nicely.

1

5
deleted 5 points ago +5 / -0
2
wiombims 2 points ago +2 / -0

I love the idea. I'm not sure you can pitch that to anybody in government, but I'm onboard. My original thought wasn't giving parents gibs but that a school system which is going to be closed shouldn't be funded for staying closed and if that money won't be retured to the taxpayer, giving it cash in hand to the parents would make them think about that money. My hope was that they would feel a sense of agency in their child's education and be more likely to support school choice and vouchers if they're not completely willing to reduce everyone's tax burden by 6k/year. I couldn't come up with a way of fitting all that in a funny one liner though. I know very few americans which are ready for a flat 2% state tax and 2% federal tax with no other means of taxation excepting export/imports. I hope that reassures you about the fellow pedes.I was also thinking that it would be funny for parents who homeschool their children without any subsidies to all of a sudden receive the money they rightfully should have but which goes to the public school system. You pretty much pay for your child's education and that of public school children when you homeschool in most places. I have no doubt that some households would spend that 6k on lotto and cigs then dump Timmy back onto the public school system a year behind in their education.

1
Shigaru 1 point ago +5 / -4

Maybe. But parents deserve more here. That money was already allocated for education. One parent will likely need to stay home. Or parebt will need to buy homeschooling supplies and books. Parents could really use that money to help during the fake virus closings.

29

My son will be taught real math not that common core bullshit no matter how school starts again in the fall.

11
HockeyMom4Trump 11 points ago +12 / -1

No. You should just be able to pay less taxes, as should your neighbors without children.

The government should not be taking money from other families (with or without children) to redistribute to another family to teach their own children. That is not the governmentโ€™s job.

What is going on with these kinds of comments tonight? Think of how many freaks would get money to teach little Johnny only to blow it on drugs, a new car, a vacation. We have tons of people on SNAP benefits, getting free lunches (and breakfasts) at the schools, going to food shelves. They supposedly can%to afford food, but can sure all have cell phones, nice shoes, etc. Itโ€™s about priorities.

The government should not be in the business of redistributing wealth. Never should the government take from one family to give to another, no matter how noble the cause. That is not the governmentโ€™s job.

4
Litecola 4 points ago +4 / -0

And look how they tied public schools with welfare, feeding the kids, day care, etc. Cut taxes, welfare slugs don't benefit from that. NOTE this has to be done at the STATE and local level.

1
ARfreedom 1 point ago +1 / -0

And when democrats are willing to abide by the gov't's actual job I'll be right there gladly supporting the bill that eliminates handouts. I pay more than my fair share of taxes. I'm married with one child, that china flu stimulus check that was $1200 a person and $500 per child. Yeah, my family got all of $191 from that. There's not a snowball's chance in hell of my state refunding or lowering my school taxes, so I'd like MY money back from wherever I can get it. I, like many others, was fully billed but not fully provided my child's schooling.

2
wiombims 2 points ago +2 / -0

I wouldn't be surprised if 4 years of apprenticeship with their parents would give us journeymen electricians/plumbers/carpenters by the time they were 16. I bet they'd work up to code and everything. It wouldn't surprise me if they were as equally likely to pass the SAT with a decent score and could speak spanish as a second language. College prep might be a slightly different issue but it would be up to the parents to decide the risk/reward with their children. DIdn't americans have a 90% literacy rate before public schooling was even a thing in the U.S.?

2
ARfreedom 2 points ago +2 / -0

I don't know about the literacy rate, but it's something I want to look into now.

The USA had better standing against the rest of the world regarding the output of our education system before the creation of the Department of Education in 1980, and we've been getting worse pretty much ever since.

26
KAG4EVRodysseus11 26 points ago +26 / -0

unfortunately, he can only force this to happen on the federal portion of collected education taxes, which is only about 10% of the total.

Most education funding is done at the state level, and is funded primarily via county collected property taxes. Therefore, the states have to be the ones to make these reforms happen. Guess what color states are unlikely to return jack shit to parents no matter what?

culpfiction 7 points ago +7 / -0

This seems like the perfect opportunity to go 100% at ushering in true school choice nationwide.

An EO or bill basically mandating that the majority of any funds raised or taxed for education must follow the individual student, however they are educated. Rather than defaulting to the giant public institutions and in very limited small cases going to homeschool or charter as it is now.

The unions in CA have lobbied to block charter schools from taking any more public funds for more students. So they are all capped now when the demand is highest. It's not the schools' fucking money, it should be for the students.

1
wiombims 1 point ago +1 / -0

That was my thought exactly. We've been discussing school choice on public broadcast since Thomas sowell was a strapping young 30something. He's 90 now. Time we made it something more than a conversation.

7
ChocolateEvryday 7 points ago +7 / -0

In our blue city the teacher's union runs the show to the detriment of our city's children. We already can't afford their salaries and benefits, so I would think even a small 10% hit would bitch slap them.

HockeyMom4Trump 4 points ago +4 / -0

Our state would want MORE taxes, no matter what option was in place for schooling this year

1
wiombims 1 point ago +1 / -0

I have a better idea. How about we hire them directly. Americans have great respect and affection for teachers. We just don't like our children being brainwashed into the current crop of racist communists flying a tolerance flag while bashing people's brains in and trying to destroy the very foundations of American society according to a paint by numbers scheme from a KGB demoralization manual. 6K/child means a class of 40 will be able to pay 4-6 teachers an average salary. Pick your teachers, pick their competencies according to your cohort's needs. Maybe you have a physics teacher in your herd of families who can take up the slack a bit there and you forego a teacher in that area. Maybe you actually play sports with your children and forego the P.E. teacher or you hire a weight lifting coach. I don't want to portray teachers as the scapegoats or bad people or make them work as slaves like the communists in this country want to turn seemingly every profession into. I don't even want any teachers to lose their jobs. I THINK we could even figure something out for the rubber room teachers.

Lemontree75 19 points ago +20 / -1

I'm all for this! Planned to choose a charter school with homeschool, until we were told that their funding was blocked. School's supposed to start on 3 weeks, and no one knows if we will get the elementary waiver, despite calls to the school board and health department. Will be homeschooling kids on my own and just spend a couple of hundred on the curriculum and supplies. Not going to be working my part-time, home based business, so those funds would come in handy!

Hallelujah! I've been working on a class action lawsuit aimed at schools that dont open on time and provide the services that we tax payers pay for. There has been surprisingly good response from parents, grandparents, and some residents that pay the high tax rate without children. They say why should we pay the government for services we arent receiving. Hopefully this will make a difference if only small.

I have kids that arent school aged yet but I'm still paying an arseload of property taxes.

These dang kids better take their little booties to school and learn how to read, how to write, and how to do advanced calculus. Get off the internet and stop wasting my money.

1
wiombims 1 point ago +1 / -0

What if I told you that the best prep work and study aids are on the internet? There was an article heavily upvoted on TD a couple weeks ago where it was finally admitted that student success wasn't tied to economics or even iq. It was directly correlated to how much time was spent privately tutoring the child. Not a big shocker to any of the "privileged" parents paying for tutoring to get that perfect SAT score.

11
Madandbad 11 points ago +11 / -0

Thank you! Democrats do not give a fuck that people who work and can't afford tutors would be totally fucked with schools staying closed.

You don't want to teach? Give your salary to parents so they can hire somebody or take time off of work and make sure their kids are literate.

Damn right. I paid a lot of money in property taxes this year. Now our school district is saying theyโ€™re going to give kids one warning and then essentially expel them to remote learning if they donโ€™t wear their masks. Fuck that tyrannical bullshit. Already on the waitlist to get my soon to be first grader into a Catholic school. Not sure why I even tried public. They banned fucking DR. SEUSS from the school library for being racist. Should have known to make the move right then and there.

Check if your state has a voucher or tax credit system. TX doesn't, so we paid property taxes while sending our daughter to a private school. It blows, especially since I fucking hated my city government and begrudged those money-blowing whores every nickel I paid.

PUT EDUCATION FUNDS IN TO THE HANDS OF PARENTS TO BE USED FOR HOMESCHOOLING OR PRIVATE TUTORS.

CREATE A MARKET FOR SPECIFIC FOCUSED EDUCATION

REMOVED THE STATE OVERWATCH FOR EDUCATION

THEY REMOVED GOD FROM SCHOOLS SO LETS GET OUR CHILDREN BACK HOME WHERE GOD IS.

7
PeytonManThing 7 points ago +7 / -0

Seriously. Teachers want to get paid to not teach. If they do online courses then the states could just make standardized courses. No need for teachers if itโ€™s not acting as a day care

When are the property tax law suits gonna start?

Half the bill is school related if the building isn't open why do I have to pay for it...

4
FuckRedditWithADildo 4 points ago +4 / -0

^ This ^

In NJ where I live my property taxes for a 1/3 acre lot is 10,900 per year. Of which 5800 is for the schools. I don't have kids, nor do I want them right now. Why should I have to foot the bill for people who don't want to work and stay closed by CHOICE.

If over the past 14 years i got that money back, I could donate it to a good Catholic school or homeschooling coop, or heck even invested in my local community. But nooo they just keep sucking more and more cash from people for these gestappo, sorry... UNIONS...

6
CookiesNCream 6 points ago +6 / -0

Yes, Please! Our kid is an adult, so would be nice to not pay school taxes.

6
RollWave 6 points ago +7 / -1

Foster parents get, what $8k/yr from the state? what's a typical public school funding per student? $6k?

Fostering 4 kids and homeschooling them would get you $56k/year? With a large rural home, 6 kids may be reasonable. $84k/year to house and educate 6 children.

This is not a completely ridiculous idea...

8
HockeyMom4Trump 8 points ago +8 / -0

Where does that money come from? Not โ€œthe governmentโ€ but from other taxpayers. I am not a fan of all these Pedes wanting to just redistribute money. Why not just cut taxes for everyone and allow people to keep more of their own earned money, I donโ€™t want the government collecting money and redistributing it to someone who is supposedly teaching six kids on a farm. Think of the unintended consequences of that idea. Is the government also redistributing that $84k taxpayer money so some crackhead in Minneapolis can supposedly teach her six children in her taxpayer funded โ€œworkforceโ€ housing? Enough with the money redistribution. Let taxpayers keep more of their own money. If a family wants to use that money they save on taxes to pay for their childrenโ€™s school, great.

4
HatnNewLognReqs 4 points ago +5 / -1

Sounds like you've never homeschooled or been in a house with 6 kids. This is a terrible idea for most people. Most folks aren't good teachers and many arent good parents. With the crap you see in the foster system, even more kids would be incredibly wrecked.

1
wiombims 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'll roll the dice over having them graduate as fully functioning members of antifa and marching for blm. Do you remember how pervasive the walkouts were for the school shootings? I do. EVERY public and most private schools in the country encouraged kids to skip and protest. Even the ones who didn't allow kids to skip put out messages in solidarity of gun control and all sorts of crap. Can you imagine your kids going to public school and being told to go out and protests against a constitutional right for extra credit?!

4
culpfiction 4 points ago +4 / -0

You're right. Fostering also provides additional tax incentives, and the state covers their healthcare fully!

Here in CA, a normal student is about $6k in funding. But minorities, or English language learners / low income folks get more, in the 9-12k range at my wife's public school. Throw in behavior or developmental issues requiring special care and that total can easily be 15-20k per student annually.

Those kids however are still vastly underserved by the public system, seeing a psycholist for 30 mins once per week, or speech therapy barely here and there... It's sad really.

My niece goes to a private school. Most of the teachers did jack shit during the lockdown. They would email workseets to the students and expect the kid to basically learn everything on their own and turn in the worksheet at the end of the week.

A lot of parents decided to pull their kids out of the school and homeschool them instead.

5
pursuitoftruth1776 5 points ago +6 / -1

Where's the lie? I say give the appropriated money to parents so they can either homeschool or hire private teachers. Government has consistently failed in education.
