not selling me, i go to many historic places and just to see a statue - this isn't ancient greece. the statue may be nice and people look at it when there, but I'm sure they're not going to kittyhawk to look at a statue and without people would still visit. i bet you tell the stores they get a tax break since they don't need to maintain that statue any longer, they wouldn't miss it ether

People don't go to see empty, overgrown, fields. Even if there are tax breaks, and I don't know if there would be, many of these sites and statues are built and maintained by non profit organizations, volunteers, and donations. Without a monument and someplace for people to go and say - I was there - and take pictures, the tourists will just fall off drastically.

doesn't sound real inviting - an overgrown field with a statue. can't believe the statue is what keeps tourists coming. i'd think some type VR interactive piece would work a lot better. the only vandalism you'd get on that would be from cyber hackers and I doubt they'd bother. imagine seeing a virtual reenactment of the first flight virtually via your phone. or being able to take a photo of you at kittyhawk with the wright brothers virtually behind you. i am sure the savings on maintaining a statue and its grounds would offset the cost of building. you probably won't agree with me, but think it is a big waste of tax dollars to send troops to protect statues - no matter how important the statue is to you personally. is it worth those troops getting blinded by lasers? first it'd be terrible loosing your sight because someone felt a statue was that important and to boot we (taxpayers) get stuck with the medical bill.

No,and if the statue is gone, it's just an overgrown field. Building a 'virtual' statue still requires servers, maintenance, and artists to build that 3D scene. At this point, I think you're living in a fantasy land where 'virtual' means no work? You want to save 'taxes' on something that is paid for by individuals, donations, and the money the park itself takes in? At the same time, kill the tourist draw that is supporting businesses and the whole town? Whole towns die like that... I think that there are a lot of people who died for freedom and this country. And a lot more people who would die for it. You're concern trolling. Why are you here?

I was giving you an alternative since you made the point that the taxes wouldn't be lower - or the donation or whatever - instead of spending money on maintaining a statue and it's grounds build the virtual statute. I think i even said that if you read my comment instead of getting agitated and calling me a troll. so you are an advocate of sending in troops to protect a statue - some of whom are getting blinded? I say let the building and statues fall and if you want to protect something, protect neighborhoods, private businesses and the public. You are still not painting a nice picture of this so called park - an overgrown field and a statue - I don't really think you are going to convince me it is at risk of being toppled or that it is a great draw to the surrounding businesses. The Wrights weren't slave owners or do things that could appear wrong in the eyes of native americans (the reason many of the statues are being targeted). My idea my be a draw - I was trying to help you out since you feel so strongly about your great great grandfather's statue. Lets talk real statues: how about some of the confederate monuments in Savannah? Those may be a draw and bring business into the communities. I still don't give a crap if one of those get toppled. I would think it was a shame if a house or business was damaged - but a statue? they can easily be replaced. Statues may be a draw, but I don't think they are worth endangering military - and like I said before: the government buildings? They can all come down - drain the swaps by eliminating the buildings where the government officials work.

Heck the more I think about the more I think you're wrong - if a park and overgrown field are the only thing supporting a town, it is going to fall on its own. I feel bad and see you are invested emotionally in this statue and maybe the town, I don't know. But if you are, you should be taking all the ideas people will throw at you to maintain it from dying and stop relying on big government in the form of military force. I know those troops, their housing and food while deployed and their transportation are costing all of tax dollars.
