The US consulate in China is right now at this very moment surrounded by their police, it is not exactly prudent to be anything but diplomatic at this point. We leave ours, they leave theirs, and let if be.

Whatever damage that has been done is already done, best to just let everyone leave peacefully on both sides. There is not going to be any "evidence" for either country to collect from the consulates.
