I understand the problem we had with mental institutions. What I don't understand is how throwing all these at risk people out on the street to live under bridges or be in and out of jail until they finally die is somehow better.

Especially if the person is so mentally unwell that their aging parents/guardians can't realistically care for or control them. The other day my son and I were driving in Minneapolis near Lake Calhoun. There was a woman with obvious mental issues just wandering around in the street in heavy traffic. She was not looking, not stopping, and just stepping right in front of cars. My son was concerned she was going to get killed. This woman is the type of person that probably would benefit from a mental institution.

While many of them are sitting on endowments in the billions of dollars, they have raised tuition far above the rate of inflation, increased the ratio of administrative personnel to teachers to beyond 1-to-1, and mis-educated these poor kids.
There are a lot of broken-hearted, cruelly rejected parents who really don't know what happened to their children. Maybe that's their fault, but I can't believe many parents are pleased with the mindless, hateful, violent creatures their children have become.
