Sports, men or women, serve no real societal purpose. It's just a money sink for those who support it through disposable income. Partially a vessel for advertising or promotion. It taps into the primal tribalistic tendencies we have to feel like we belong, and root for our champions. It also gives a chance for some to live vicariously through the athletes, for sports that they understand but were never good enough to make it, so it's a longing hold over.
Under normal circumstances it's a display of our success/opulence that we have so much money we pay people tons of money to watch them play games. When in all actuality it just highlights our lack of priorities. We throw tons of money at sports, then turn around and bitch about health care, crumbling roads, homeless people or whatever. Then ironically have these multimillionaire athletes lecture us on how "bad" of people we are and how our priorities are fucked, to the tune of propaganda.

Why on earth would a female college athlete try to play at the next level? Just coach. I bet colleges throw oodles of money at women’s program coaches in order to comply with Title IX.
