The Press and the Academics like to pretend that we're on the "European Political Axis" from "Government controls the people" to "Government controls the companies that control the people".
The Left is on that axis. CNN, MSDNC is totally on that axis. The Right's "Think Tanks" and the 4% of the Republicans that are still not-for-Trump, and half of Fox and all the RINOs and useful idiots of the Right - they are on that axis. See: Mittens. Chris Wallace, etc.
The bulk of everyone isn't even on that axis. (Even the 'actual liberals' if any remain) But the press sees it as their full-time job to pretend we are. And, as you say, to disguise "Leftists" as "Liberals".
There are no liberals in the current democrat party. Liberal is very different from leftist.
Just remember this that the word "liberal" means:

"liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law".
Leftists hate free speech, use cancel culture to get opposing views, behavior/opinons cancelled, are not concerned with broadening their own knowledge, hate liberty to the point where they will report you for not wearing a mask, don't believe in equality before the law (openly racist towards whites as well as conservatives, will send you to prison for life if you are right winger and support Trump - e.g. Flynn).
