The Jews of the day were waiting for a Messiah to bring them out from under Rome, and to preserve their existing religious power structures would’ve been a nice bonus. They had every right to feel oppressed, but they cast aside the freedom Christ offered - and still does - because what they really wanted was their turn at the top again.
