I work do mineral research in this field. There's quite a bit of hope regarding our independence with rare earths and and other critical metals, a lot of which regarding coal mines as well. A lot of which has to do with revitalizing old mines and using waste tailings. What was once considered waste minerals is now treasured and there's plenty to go around in the states.
Edit: Also, thanks pede, I'm not too familiar about the companies that mine rare earths, and will be looking for employment and internships in the coming years. Another good company to add to my list!!
