I actually prefer that voting rights can't be taken away from citizens... because those types of people rarely exercise that right anyway. I see the point of not wanting them to vote for the other political party though.
I used to think like this too, but voting was never meant to be a right. It's a privilege that was reserved for property owners. Universal suffrage just means that the lowest common denominator gets to choose your leaders. It's insanity- why should we want people who break the law to choose the officials who will make the laws?
People who break the law should not have a say in creating and enforcing laws, it is an obvious conflict of interest. Once they've done their time they should get voting rights back, but not while they're serving.
