A lot of woke stuff was more from the Christian right in the 80's- and somehow there actually was kind of an ideological switch wherein the last 15 years, conservatives have been more liberal in the traditional sense of the word, and liberals banked hard left and have not corrected their path. 12 years ago, everyone running for president who had a chance was against gay marriage and illegal immigration. If a Dem/Liberal had those views today, they would be literally Hitler.
