But what they do try to do is still tax for state income if you don't file paperwork with the franchise tax board saying you moved out. If you forget to do that they wait a few years then come after you for back taxes. So will have to pay or go to count to proof the date you moved out.
I have worked with lots of high net worth individuals that relocated out of CA and the amount of them that have been in crazy detailed audits by the FTB is shocking.
In one case the FTB had a copy of a police report where my client was visiting and was riding in his buddies car when it was in an accident. I lost my poker face and said "wait.... you are using that against my client?"
On the bright side, I have never lost a residency audit.
New Jersey basically made an exit tax -- if I recall, it's if you own a property, then sell the property but aren't buying another one in New Jersey, you get to pay a special tax.

It was cheaper for a relative to outright buy a 14" enclosed trailer than it was to rent a UHaul for a one-way trip out of California. The rates that UHaul is charging are unbelievable right now because they literally have to factor in the cost to have an employee drive empty UHauls back to Calfornia from around the country instead of letting the normal ebb and flow balance things out.
(PS, don't worry, relative was a Midwest native that came to CA for work after the 2008 crash but got approved for a transfer back to the Midwest so home they go.)
