It is a synthesized form of quinine. That is what allowed them to patent it.

This is where the Gin and Tonic came from. The British in India catching malaria - they thought the taste of quinine was bitter, so they mixed it with tonic water and eventually Gin. Want to stay safe from the China virus? Drink gin and tonic.

Curious:

Is G&T becoming the drink of choice for bar goers?

Schweppes diet tonic water is my tonic water of choice. Anytime I start having a little ache in my throat or a consistently stopped up nose I drink 4-7 oz of schweppes and dbl up on my daily dose of zinc vitamin for about 3-4 days in a row just as a preventative.

There's not much quinine in today's tonic water... pretty sure, you may want to check though.

Following a Dr.'s recommendation. 4-7 oz of schweppes provides enough quinine to allow the zinc to enter cells. That being said he also told me not to take a dbl dose of zinc for too long as its not safe. 4 days max in intervals.
