The worst schools are generally public, but that doesn't mean charter schools are always going to provide a high-quality, indoctrination-free education either. Urban charter schools currently compete with urban public-schools, and that's a low bar by any standard. The only real solution is to make everyone compete for education dollars. Removing bureaucracy is the other side of the equation. We need to be open to new forms of schooling.
The curriculum of schools is almost entirely bureaucratic. It doesn't cultivate problem solving, it doesn't deliver high standardized test scores, and it doesn't teach valuable skills. The public school system takes 12 years to prepare a young mind for absolutely nothing except serving driver's through a fast-food window. There are better ways to spend 12 years.
May I plaster this all over Facebook?
