It seems like a lot of the newer shows on Netflix, CW, etc are shoehorning in LGBT+ characters and that is their only defining trait.

It’s not something that’s in the background either. It is literally front in center. Audiences are expected to watch because they are gay or trans or whatever.

That’s my take at least.

Oh, duh. That should have been more obvious to me. And yes, this is the left's entire bag. Identity politics. It's not who you are or how you behave or what skills and ingenuity you bring to the table, it's what you are and how many like you are "represented" and thus it's pretty much illegal to make a TV show without a strong independent black womyn, a snarky lesbian that don't need no man, a tech geek girl with an Adam's apple and 5 o'clock shadow, the savvy and peaceful Islamic nuclear physicist, and the well-tamed, mildly-effeminate bespectacled white male whose job is to defer to all of the above and not speak unless spoken to.
