That's what most people seem to collect around as an explanation.
One of the problems is the current Egyptians won't let anyone in to do any research. As far as they are concerned it is settled science.
There are pieces of smoothed corundum that today we would only be able to smooth with silicon carbide or diamond. We use corundum to smooth granite!
