I have been involved in donation both personal and corporate and it is about access and having your side heard. You hold a fund raiser and you get 30 minutes at the event to push for support for something that both Dems and Reps agree on.
This is very normal and nothing to be ashamed of.
Example, we are on the board of a not for profit that cares for the multiple handicap. If you have one handicap you can get help, housing and such but a place for the blind will not take someone that has MS also and is deaf. We needed support to help get some Fed and Local funding for our homes and to pass laws that allow certain kinds of contributions to be tax free and allow use of certain type of government funds. We needed Dems and Reps to vote for it.
