Boise, ID. Although the city is liberal, it's more like "Idaho liberal". The outskirts of the city of Boise leans more conservative and you get more and more conservative the further away you get.

Meridian, ID is 15 minutes away from Boise and is barely over 100k. Last I checked, it was one of the most conservative districts in Idaho.

for most low-population states, their big cities are big because of:

  • capitals
  • state colleges
  • factories
  • ports

capitals can sometimes be good. state college towns are bad unless they're an ag school in a conservative state. factories are hit or miss. ports are shitholes across the board.

thus the big cities in low-population conservative states are paradoxically liberal leaning. if you want a big city that's conservative, it'll be in a big state like texas or one of the big states on the east coast that aren't yankee. there are so many conservative suburbs in those states that are essentially diffuse cities where you can find a good spot.

This is accurate. The only conservative town I know of in Texas with a college is Abilene.
