But now add property tax, tag and registration for car, gas tax, sin tax, state income tax, any taxes that are charged to companies/hospitals are passed on to you. Do you think your company “pays” payroll tax. Nope the figure that into what it costs to have you around. When all is said and done I’d say 50% they just hide it in every fucking dark corner they can so you can’t actually count it. Then they say “well you only paid 17%.” Shit is nuts. Love the meme!

if you get paid with a w-2, the government is taking out ~15% for medicare and social security before you even see it
if you make under ~50,000 per year, you end up paying somewhere between 0 and 10% in taxes -- some people have a negative tax rate if they have enough kids and credits
if you make under ~100k you pay somewhere between 10% and 15% in effective taxes
people are usually way off on their estimation of what their functional tax rate is but they also don't know about the payroll taxes, which actually sorta cancel out (they're about 15% too high on their guess of normal taxes and they don't even know about the 15% from FICA)
