I personally do not believe they should be required, but I have come around to the idea that if a certain percentage DO wear masks, the spread of this thing can be drastically slowed. (To any reading: yes, I have heard and seen all the memes about the size of the virus vs. the size of the holes in the mask, you can smell a fart, they don't work, etc. The issue is that the virus is not itself airborne but does ride along with moisture droplets which DO get caught on the mask...)
Having said all that, please also read below the other responses which quite correctly point out that A) there is some doubt as to the accuracy of reported cases and resultant deaths, and B) even if they were accurate, this would not be much more impactful than an aggressive flu season.

It's the government mandated mask-wearing that people reasonably object to, and also the policies of national retail store chains that are mandating masks because many people have no realistic alternatives but to shop in those stores.
