They don't know that Greece is the reason we have democracy. They don't realize Rome is the reason we have our Senate. They also don't know the many, many lessons they learned along the way, that we, as a country, have used to build the greatest country ever known in the (known) history of mankind. Sure, there have been longer standing empires, but nothing quite like America.
Yet, today, people forget our roots. Stories from their ancient times shows us that they were not that different from us at all, they don't see how human the myths are, there are human lessons to be learned about the great "gods" (aka deified kings). I attend academic conferences pretty regularly as part of my work, and the structure tends to be plenary sessions (everyone is encouraged to attend and nothing conflicts timing-wise) and parallel sessions (a bunch of presentations going on at the same time and you have to choose what to attend). Anyhow, the best way to ensure I never listen to a presentation is for it to be described as an exploration of gender or race. I mean I suppose I could go, make a recording, and then use it to treat nausea or insomnia in the future.
