That didn't really work for them in the midterms, there was a blue wave and most Republicans that ran on the ticket of "I'm with Trump" lost to Dems. I can't explain why but that's what happened.

There was no blue wave.

The Democrats picked up about half as many House seats as they should have, and they actually LOST seats in the Senate. That's very poor performance compared to most other U.S. midterm elections, right off the bat.

BUT, consider this: in 2018, around thirty Republican incumbents in the House retired rather than run for re-election. Normally, an incumbent candidate holds a strong advantage--but in THIRTY separate House races, that advantage evaporated. So the Democrats received a huge break for thirty of their candidates, in that those candidates were no longer running at a disadvantage against an incumbent. Even with this huge break, the Democrats only picked up something like forty seats in the House. When you take that into consideration, it becomes clear 2018 was a monumental failure for the Democrats. Possibly THE WORST midterm performance ever for the minority party in a U.S. midterm.
