Question to all the (somewhat) olde pedes here....what was the time up to the fall of the Soviet Union like? From the outside did it seem like they were peaking when reality the fundamentals were weak, or did everybody see the collapse coming? I'm curious what the parallels to the collapse of Russian communism and what's going on with China are.
I was still pretty young, but it doesn't feel analogous to today. The nuclear threat was real. Bomb drills in school, but we still said the pledge everyday. It was pretty evident towards the end that the USSR was a nuke holder and space program, but nothing else. I remember how conditions over there were way worse than expected once the cameras came in.
