Edit: If cops give you trouble, just explain that you were using proper police "use of force continuum" (always being 1 step above the perpetrator). He threw coffee at you; you threw a fist at him. Simple and justified deterrent against future incidents. Taught the couple that unlike Twitter, real life has consequences for the blue checkmark soylent people.
