An example would be if a private pilot with no instrument rating was logging time they would have to create a flight plan that wouldn't end up having them fly into the time zone during night flight.
Its also relevant when trying to understand sea level in order to set your altimeter so you don't smash into a mountain while flying under instrument conditions.
