I have been tossing around the idea of getting a non-projectile taser. I'm mostly concerned about triggered crazies coming at me when I may be with my small children. I considered mace, but I am worried about collateral damage(kids somehow catching a draft), and personally I don't want to have to justifiably murder someone in front them, which rules out a gun. I live in WA where weapon and self-defense laws are pretty amazing and there is no duty to retreat.

Neither the tazer or pepper spray are a good idea if you have the ability to carry a firearm. Period.
Stun guns are terrible weapons. You have to get up close to someone, find an area with no clothing or thin clothing, and use it until they comply due to pain. It doesn't even incapacitate them like a real taser.
You'd be much better off with pepper gel (rather than spray) if you're worried about collateral. Pepper spray takes effect more quickly and causes a bit more pain, but you'll get some on yourself if you're in an enclosed area or the wind blows the wrong way.
Projectile tasers work about half of the time due to thick clothing and inaccuracy, and you can't do followup shots like you can with pepper spray.

There's a limit to the amount of retaliation you can use before you also get charged with assault. For example, if you punch the woman once and then defend yourself after she goes down from the guy she was with with a single punch to stop him you're fine because you did not use excessive force. If you just start curbstomping both of them, then you're going to get charged.
