China was researching how to transmit bat coronavirus to humans. They modified it so that it transmits better to humans than it does to bats, but it's still just a normal coronavirus. A lot of times you do this type of research with great intentions, if you can figure out how to make something spread you better can learn things that will help you stop it.
Given the ease at which it spreads and the very minimal risk it poses the only reasonable strategy is to protect the vulnerable but otherwise return to normal. Most are immune to it and don't even need antibodies. Most of the rest will recover fine. Virtually everyone will survive if given HQC early. Many places already have heard immunity (Sweden on purpose New York on accident).
I actually think we underreacted early when we didn't know what was going to happen. It could have been far more deadly. However at this point it's far riskier to destroy our immune systems and flatten the curve so much that it takes years to go away and has more chances to accidently mutate into a more serious problem. Not to mention the deaths and other problems caused by the lockdowns.
The other vital lesson to be learned is that we never should have allowed China to do this type of research without more supervision/spying. They were doing this research to prove that they could compete with modern countries in research and development... They can't and they are not responsible enough to handle the failures.
