The crowds are giving cover to the few violent people to hide in and retreat to. Do they condemn the violence? No. They support the violence. Just because they are not engaged in violence themselves does not make them non-violent.

Enabling violence = participating in the violence.
Or, why the "Wall of Moms" are just as deserving of tear gas as the people they are protecting.
Some of them also turn violent on a dime, like when "de-arresting" someone.
