I wish to cancel my subscription. I have been a hockey fan since I watched my first game in 1986 and I'm sad to leave. But America is not "systemically" or "systematically"(sic) racist. I will not pay to be lectured to about how my country is rotten to the core. I've read with pride how much NHL teams and individual players do to promote equality and diversity in hockey through the "hockey is for everyone" programs and their work in the local communities, for example the Capitals' tireless work with the Fort Dupont program. The NHL has highlighted the cases of actual racism that players face and, more importantly, overcome as they grow up. But rather than stand proudly beside the real work you do that actually makes a difference, you chose virtue signalling and trashing America as fundamentally evil. You could have stood up proudly and declared to the world that you don't need fake displays of wokeness because the NHL, your teams, and your fans work for real equality every day. The display before the Oilers/Blackhawks game was disgusting. Not one player faced the flags for the anthems. Instead everyone circled around and focused all of their attention on the one person, who wasn't from either team, who was brought in for the sole purpose of lecturing us and then kneeling in protest. I had hoped the NHL would be the one last bastion where I could watch sports for entertainment, without being prosthelytized in the religion of "wokeness". But sadly I was wrong.
By the way, true social justice doesn't come with a brand logo, decals, and officially licensed merchandise.

As player most of my life, and just started watching again this last year... I'm done with them. I gave them one more chance after seeing what they did pre-picking winners for ratings. If this were just one team, I'd be minutely less upset, but this was clearly a league decision. Fuck pro sports, some of it is scripted to a degree anyways.
I'm gonna stick to playing locally and watch their ratings drop like stone with everyone else.
Local rinks struggle to stay in the black every year even without Chyna virus. It’s tremendously expensive to maintain a rink, especially aging ones. At about 30 years of age, most rinks need to replace expensive equipment-not just repair. Now they’re dying because of the covid. Closures everywhere. All but a few beginner and novice adult teams have bailed currently where I play. There used to be multiple 35 plus teams, gone. One entire team was law enforcement. Gone. 50 and 60 plus teams all cancelled. Now they have mask requirements and you have to get dressed before entering the arena. Locker rooms are closed. It’s so annoying. Gone are the pitchers of beer in the locker rooms after the games. Now we are in the parking lot. It is summer. It basically sucks.
Anyway rinks are dying everywhere. There won’t be an interest in collegiate or pro hockey in a few years because of this.

Did you know hockey is one of the most expensive youth sports in the USA? It isn’t feasible for most underprivileged kids to be involved in competitive youth hockey. At all. If the nhl really cared, they’d be dumping money into youth programs. Lots and lots of money. It’s out of reach even for middle class kids if they wind up in a travel team.
