Oh god me too. My poor naive brain was so confused fresh out of college to meet a super intelligent, Catholic (gasps), scientist as one of my first bosses. And now I get treated the same. How can I possibly be conservative and a scientist!
People mistake me for a liberal as well. I went to a British grocery store back in February owned by a British immigrant, I knew going in that he was right wing because the reviews online were complaining that he had a tendency to rant about politics to customers. When I was checking out he started going on about politics and he actually thought I was a liberal, he was quite surprised when I told him I wasn't. I would have gladly continued talking with him if I wasn't with someone who was clearly annoyed at his political rants.
