It's a Swiss company, no wonder it's based :).

And messages are encrypted if you send a message from one protonmail mailbox to another. Switch ASAP.

gorillachannel 7 points ago +7 / -0

They are also encrypted in the database, which is the primary benefit.

Rugar22 4 points ago +4 / -0

I'll definitely switch when I get the chance. I'm currently stuck with my gmail that is connected to my community college.

1
macrolinx 1 point ago +1 / -0

Why wait? I've had multiple college accounts that I ONLY used for college stuff. I have other unrelated accounts that I've had for 20 years with yahoo, as well as two different protonmail accounts.

2
Rugar22 2 points ago +2 / -0

I can't keep up with multiple emails lol.

3
macrolinx 3 points ago +3 / -0

lol. I get it man. No judgement, we're all different.

I have 7 accounts between three different providers. Plus work and an old college account.

But then again, I've been in IT for 25 years so....

I use ProtonMail and ProtonVPN. Great services and massive discounts if you subscribe to both.

raybiker73 27 points ago +27 / -0

I've been using the paid version of Protonmail for nearly two years, and it's great. Dump Goolag as soon as possible, you won't miss it a bit!

Brave. It has built-in ad blocking and it doesn't track you.

It's open source. You can go over the code line-by-line if you want. I haven't heard any codebros report anything fishy about it.

Chromium is very different from chrome!

3
fu-greta 3 points ago +3 / -0

Why not just use Chromium then? I'm not convinced Brave is any better. Besides, Brave rewards concern me because I believe it requires tracking of user activity.

They have a sync feature but it was disabled for a little while. Not sure if it's back.

2
Deaf_MAGA_Pede 2 points ago +2 / -0

Actually Brave is just saying that but Brave still allow Facebook to track you, even if turned off.

By far the best desktop browser is firefox, hardened with uBlock origin, Decentraleyes, Disconnect, HTTPS Everywhere, and Cookie Autodelete.

The safest desktop browser without having to change anything is Tor - just don't sign in with accounts tied to your real identity.

For mobile browsing, you need to use multiple browsers and compartmentalize your browsing.

Sorry, but internet privacy is one if those things where it's kinda tough to be a little bit pregnant.

Check out The Hated One on YouTube.

Dissenter... it's a fork of Brave.

2
anon31173 2 points ago +2 / -0

cant tell you whats best but ive been using firefox forever.

ever since the tech scare started, i put in useful addons. those include:

  • privacy badger
  • noscript
  • adblock
  • etc.

with my configuration i can tell its working to a degree, because i do not get targeted ads anymore, ever. any ads i see are in no way shaped towards me and come off as completely random (good sign)

additionally, i have to do CAPTCHA tests quite often, further indicating that tracking me isnt as easy or websites are suspicious i may be a bot.

oh and no websites get any fucking cookies. if your website breaks as a consequence of that, sucks for your website.

3
Rugar22 3 points ago +3 / -0

Firefox went full cuck mode.

You should try Brave.

1
anon31173 1 point ago +1 / -0

ill look into brave after seeing it recommended here so often, thanks pede.

what makes you say firefox went cuck? i think im out of loop on browser a fair tad

I switched from Gmail to Protonmail last year and I'm loving it so far. Just set your Gmail to forward to your Protonmail.

13
spaceghost17 13 points ago +14 / -1

No, you can't give them your e-mail in any shape or form. Update your accounts!

0
deleted 0 points ago +4 / -4
5
spaceghost17 5 points ago +6 / -1

That's incorrect, you should always be able to update your e-mail address. Check in the preferences or options etc.. I've done it for all my accounts!

I also think you are wrong, most sites allow you to change your email, it is almost always possible.

Why are door dash and jersey mike's the accounts you think of? I'm pretty sure they're talking about important accounts like bank account, utility, bills, and things like that.

3
KRosen333 3 points ago +4 / -1

Wtf even are those?

2
burkeburke 2 points ago +2 / -0

Of course you can change your email with Doordash. Sign in, go to Account, enter a new email, push Save. Literally every other website works exactly the same way.

LeftistsAreInsane 10 points ago +10 / -0

Protonmail. Brave browser. Qwant search engine. Buy American.

And of course, THE DONALD.

2
Rugar22 2 points ago +2 / -0

Isn't Qwant French?

1
LeftistsAreInsane 1 point ago +1 / -0

No clue.

1
Core2029 1 point ago +1 / -0

Thank you for the QWANT recommendation. I've noticed DDG has absolutely begun censoring results on searches this past year so FUCK'EM. Ditch DDG and go with QWANT.

1
LeftistsAreInsane 1 point ago +1 / -0

Holy shit, they really have? I was worried that would happen. What did you find in that regard?

1
Core2029 1 point ago +1 / -0

Just subtle things. Nothing overt, but it's a slippery slope that starts with the little things and snowballs.

9
LikeAWombatScorned 9 points ago +9 / -0

FYI, Protonmail is based in Switzerland (same place that you get those infamous anonymous bank accounts), and the content of email sent between Protonmail users is encrypted.

Subject and recipients are never encrypted, and obviously content of email sent to non-Protonmail accounts is not encrypted.

7
basadorojopastillado 7 points ago +7 / -0

Protonmail is awesome. Started using it about 2 months ago, when I decided to dump Google and China. Also, using Brave Browser, DuckDuckGo, and gonna buy Pur.ism Librem phone when it drops because they have high security and very little ties to China.

2
KM4JNW 2 points ago +2 / -0

I bought a Pinephone64 and a Librem5 at the same time. I received the Pinephone long ago and I'm ready to make it my daily driver once a few issues get sorted out. I still haven't received my Librem phone. I'm pretty pissed about that. You gotta ditch Android (especially Samsung or Chinese phones) - they own your ass and anybody you hang out with or communicate with.

Been with protonmail as soon as i learned it existed. You can't really go wrong with open source. If anyone is interested, check out Purism. They are currently developing an open source phone, the Librem 5. It's built on open source hardware and software. There is even the option for made in the USA model that will be produced alongside their final batch if you are wiling to shell out the money.

I used to be big into linux distors - tried many with ONLY 'free' software - too much work...distros are fine but you need the added drivers to get everything working and it’s just too much work. Love the idea of an open source phone, but I’m at the point where I just want shit to work all the time.

nachosamplerREBORN [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Ubuntu or some some other modern distro? You have support because it prompts you to use other 3rd party drivers which are not free - free as in beer - i.e., not truly open source. Try it without the third party support and have fun...yes, ubuntu is great and works nice with all the additional support, but run if for a bit and it can get flaky - not nearly as bad as Windows, but not as solid as mac OS. mac OS is based on FreeBSD a version of unix that is more locked down and hence more stable, but perhaps lacks some innovation of the full open-source community.

Updater should be built-in and should pester for an update if your nic is working and have an internet connection.

1
nachosamplerREBORN [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Also, DVD? I did not even realize they came on DVDs anymore - I suppose it prompts for updates during the install - but you can pull down the most recent version on a USB stick and do unetbootin for the install.

1
Belsnickel69 1 point ago +1 / -0

I definitely understand that. You should give it another look though, linux has made strides over the past few years. If it wasn't for gaming i would be fully switched over to ubuntu.

No complaints.

I just set up a paid Protonmail account (and started using Bitwarden password manager) after listening to episodes 174 and 175 of Michael Bazzell's privacy crash course/podcast. Getting my digital house in order!

Get a proton address. Switch over the stuff you need. Your old email will still be there. After a while you'll have the option to delete the old one.

how can i have all my emails from gmail rerouted? whats a good way to have google no longer get my email data but not have to "Start Over"

or setup your gmail account to auto-reply an email with your email address.

1
nachosamplerREBORN [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Just setup a forwarding rule on gmail to your proton account.

I've heard noise that proton mail is compromised. Just sayin.

8
WinterDog 8 points ago +9 / -1

You've heard incorrectly.

6
nachosamplerREBORN [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

Maybe...time will tell, but I doubt it: https://securityaffairs.co/wordpress/78133/hacking/protonmail-hacked-hoax.html

Kind of hope it’s true because 'The hackers are claiming they have data on Michael Avenatti and CNN employees.’...perhaps a few key accounts via direct credentials were compromised, but this is not a Proton system issue.
